Some of the stats in this video are surprising. I would not have guessed YouTube to be the second most popular search engine. It’s a great way so market your product with a visual representation.. Would not have thought of it as a marketing tool..

  2. mrsediger says:

(I’m not sure if my previous comment was posted or not. So sorry if this is a repeat. )

I normally think of YouTube as an entertainment website, and it was surprising to hear that it’s the second most popular search engine. What a great way to market your product.. Providing a visual of how it works, etc.

I know its crazy, you can damn near find anything on youtube..instructional videos for anything its great! Thats how I got more skilled with my mac.

  3. Alex Schmidt says:

As a free source of marketing, all businesses should utilize social media. It will be interesting to see what the future will bring in the technology department.

  4. Donmarsh says:

With a majority of the young population centered around social media it seems the only viable outlet to reach the growing public

  5. Garet Barry says:

This was an informative marketing advertisement. I was suprised to see the rapid decline in newspaper use. This would be a great starting point for a new business in determining their marketing strategy. Businesses need to be able to adapt to the changes in marketing quickly or they will potentially lose many clients/customers.

  6. Michael Whited says:

I love how online media has helped the public discover new businesses, the growth of a company these days depend on its ability to use social media for growth!

  7. Crystal says:

I love the idea of media being used more frequently, it is more better for environment. The world is surely changing with everything being made paperless. Although that maybe true I still like the old ways of the newspaper and t.v. ads. Everyone doesn’t have a cell phone and everyone doesn’t access to the internet. Much of our economy is based the internet.

  8. Adrienne Denney says:

I agree with the above statements about YouTube. I wouldn’t expect it to be a business/marketing tool – only because it is used so much for non-business related things. However, using YouTube in conjunction with Facebook/Twitter would be a great way to communicate product information, repost customer review (assuming they are good ones!), etc.

  9. Emily Katz says:

None of the statistics in this video were surprising (except for businesses using YouTube… I don’t entirely agree with that). As social media use continues to grow for businesses, it is going to be more challenging to differentiate your business’s content from the clutter of information available.

  10. Keith Morgan says:

With Google’s acquisition of YouTube, Google could be positioning itself as the premier ad agency of this century. As the video mentioned, television ads are being rendered obsolete by the DVR’s ability to fast forward through commercials. Consumers must be reached where they are actively watching and listening. Google ads already have infiltrated Facebook and certain smartphone apps, so it would make sense to utilize Youtube as a way for users to find more info on the products or services they saw in those ads.

  11. kellypurtle says:

Most of the statistics in the video didn’t really surprise me. I think that using social media is a smart, cheap way to market a product, but may be hard to make your product stand out over all of the others using social media to market as well. YouTube is a free way to advertise, but getting your video noticed may be extremely challenging.

  12. Nick Voris says:

It’s reassuring to see I wasn’t the only one who did a double-take at the YouTube stats. Before digging into the comments, I assumed I was just an out-of-touch Gen Xer. That still might be the case, because I’ve never been compelled to “Like” a business’ FB page and couldn’t name two adverts that have graced my news feed. How will FB monetize a guy like me? With nearly a billion users, perhaps it doesn’t matter.

Also, that vid could serve as a three minute advertisement for investing in bandwidth infrastructure. All those YouTube views require a wide pipe, ya know?

  13. Georgi Stoev says:

Youtube is definitely taking over TV’s viewers. Direct TV is going social too, you get to watch Youtube and netflix through Direct TV. So when will youtube get a competitor is my biggest question… there is a lot of TV stations but only one YouTube!

  14. Kristina Turner says:

Hmm… This makes me wonder about the entire future of advertising and marketing. It really is no surprise that businesses have figured out the Youtube phenomenon. If I were coming out with a new product or service, Youtube would be one of the first lines of my attack. How many people walk around campus with a newspaper? Oh, yeah, virtually no one (let’s not forget that Newsweek does not even come in print anymore). So what will this mean for the advertising world? What will happen when our social media is so congested with advertisements that we no longer want to use it (that’s what happened to Myspace… which is now trying to be relaunched, but they can’t find anybody willing to pay)? So what will be the next phase of reaching the masses? It will be very interesting to see. I don’t know if I even necessarily have any predictions. Except that it may change the face of social networking. For instance, the social networking sites we eventually will belong to will probably be more topic or criteria based. Like one for fashion, one for technology itself, one for sports, etc. Facebook already has the option to make pages for whatever. But Facebook won’t be what’s hot forever.

    • LuvLy Self says:

I agree, and I am also most curious about what’s coming next with marketing strategies and how that is going to effect social networking. I can’t help but imagine a more personal advertising base (Minority Report with Tom Cruise comes to mind). Right now advertising is about reaching the masses, so much so that it is going to make people look for an alternative source when the social media is so clogged up with advertisements that are too generalized. Perhaps in the future it will be a basic advertisement, but is personalized for the individual. As for theories on the direction social networking will turn…that’s anyone’s guess.

      • Ashleigh says:

I think it will eventually become more personalized as well. Some places already track previous purchases or searches to provide more relevant ads or coupons. Target already provides coupons based on purchased items.

  15. abduljalil aljasem says:

i’m one of the people that uses youtube to search for a differant marketed product to know how good or bad it is to have, also what is realy interested that there is alot of car shops company would help you to learn how to fix your car but also they would give you an idea how good their company in fixing car which i thought it is a great way of marketing.

  16. Danae Smith says:

cool way to market by incorporating such things as twitter and facebook. A littly corny but I got the whole point of the video.

  17. Whitney Van Way says:

It’s amazing to me that in the age of social media I still find companies who don’t have a social media presence. The statistics in the video should be proof enough alone to convince companies to invest in hiring someone to run their social media. The payoff in increased brand awareness would more than cover their investment in hiring someone.

  18. Hillary Stark says:

This video was great! I will definitely be using some of the facts listed in an upcoming pitch to my boss on the importance of our company embracing social media.

  19. Kristy says:

It was really wonderful to see solid numbers to match the class discussions. Most of our current events in class revert back to social media and it’s effect on the marketing as we know it. The I love being to use these different avenues to find out if I should try that “new” concept or news on how my favorite companies are evolving. What that might mean for methe consumer. I think awareness is key to consistent, effective growth in business.

  20. Danielle Cody says:

The statistics in that video blew my mind. It sure puts things in perspective about how important advertising on the Internet is for businesses if they want to survive in today’s market. I liked the statistic about FB, if it were a country it’d be the third largest country! Pretty interesting!

  21. Osama Chaudhry says:

I was surprised to hear about most of these statistics, however the portion about the mobile market did not surprise me because I work for a cell phone company and the demand for smartphones and tablets has increased dramatically over the past few years and there seems to be no sign of it slowing down. Businesses should definitely embrace mobile marketing and use it to its full extent.

  22. Bobby Trnavsky says:

It will be interesting to see where social media fits within marketing strategies in a few years. With this particular form of advertising growing at such and exponential rate there has to be a breaking point.

  23. Eric Bradley says:

I never would have thought youtube would be such a widely used search engine. I guess it’s nice for people who would rather watch how to do a task than read instructions. I am guilty of this. The above ad about the Mercedes is awesome. I think Defoe’s deal was still sweeter.

  24. J.Fulkerson says:

While social media has become an innovative tool enabling businesses to become actively engaged with their target market and better understand the needs and wants of their customers, it could also be viewed as a challenge for companies attempting to reach older demographics. Even though older demographics are beginning to make up a larger segment of the user population, I question how social media can be effective for products geared towards older generations and if communicating in a more traditional manner is a more suitable approach. It would be interesting to analyze the social media habits of seldom and infrequent online users and decipher ways to disrupt their traditional behavior creating an increase in new social media users.

  25. Jared Muirhead says:

I certainly agree with many of the statistics presented. I believe social media is a must for a company to be competitve and reach a large population. I specifically agree with the stats on television and newspapers as I tend to mute the TV when a show goes to commercials and information is much more current on news websites than waiting to receive a paper the following day.

  26. Heather Wilber says:

I was interested to find out that television marketing is not as popular as it once was. I thought that t.v. was one of the highest traffic areas to get to a target market. I am glad I watched this video so I now know what the best ways for reaching a target market for my future business.

  27. jordan j says:

The ease of accessibility of information on the internet is linked to its usage. Marketers should strategize to place advertising in these different social markets to increase exposure. Analysis should be done also as to what created the most “catches” and highlight that market of advertising.

  28. Monica Langley says:

I always think of google or bing as a search engine before I even consider YouTube. It is really not surprising that it’s number two. All videos on YouTube usually start with an ad. I get to fast toward through them on tv but rarely YouTube. You can see where marketers tried to overcome TiVo.

  29. Mia Swopes says:

I love how easy it is to advertise a business now compared to how difficult it used to be!

  30. Daniel C. Segalo says:

As annoying as ads are on youtube, it really is one of the best ways to reach potential customers. If a person wants to watch a video, a 30sec add is not going to stop them. A lot of people, especially in the younger generation, see the time they spend viewing the add as their “payment” to watch a free video. Or better yet, they have been so conditioned to ads, they just accept it as a way of life. What a powerful tool!

  31. Jonathan Leeks says:

I think these results will eventually effect big business. With information becoming more and more readily available at minimal costs, big money has less control over mediums of advertising. The new main medium of advertising and firm visibility seems to be the internet; this allows small businesses to have similar access to the people of the world without the cumbersome expenses and inefficiencies of print and tv advertising.

  32. balance says:

I understand that utilizing youtube generates views for online video advertisement, but I wonder if any exposure is good exposure. Quite personally, I am really annoyed with the youtube ads as well, probably along with many of the users, so, I wonder if potential customers might have a negative association with a brand or product as a result of their irritation. Is there any instrument for measuring that effect?

  33. John Larson says:

32.I understand that utilizing youtube generates views for online video advertisement, but I wonder if any exposure is good exposure. Is there any instrument for measuring that effect?

  34. Derek Bembry says:

Of course I think it is very interesting to see the huge statistics on number of users for various social media groups like facebook and twitter, especially about their rapid growth each and everyday. I do believe the more pertinent statistic and perhaps more valuable bit, would be how to see an analysis of how profitable these said implementation strategies actually are and if they really do whatever strategy they are trying to do. I read that facebook has one of the worst ad-clicks per user of any major website. The study showed that even though the number of users that clicked on ads was extremelly low, of that percentage, the majority actually clicked the ad by accident.

  35. Shoko Ishimoto says:

I was surprised with the info presented in the video. It says that there are more than 1 trillion pages on internet. With that much info, the challenge is how to find the right, trustful info that you really need. Though the social media is a powerful way to reach so many people, the strategy on how to reach to the right people would be the biggest factor for successful marketing campaign.

  36. Bridget Angles says:

I think the facts and statistics in this video speak for themselves. There is no doubt about it that social media and the use of cell phones is still on the rise, so a smart marketing technique would be to use them! The more people that use these outlets, the more exposure the product will get, which explains the drop in effectiveness of television and newspaper advertisements.

  37. Frank Lorenzo says:

The video is very true in confirming that consumers are more interested in convenience and social aspects than before. I know that I don’t often watch TV because of the storm of ads, but if you watch a show from an online provider, advertisements usually only play briefly at the beginning of the show. Using your phone to go on the web is very easy and allows one to read news without stopping for a newspaper, which makes these cites a good place to advertise rather than a paper. Also, concerning youtube ads, most are skippable after 5 seconds, but I have actually watched some longer when the ad interested me.

  38. Suzzanne Cheney says:

I am not surprise that newspaper ads are down, since a majority of people, including myself, prefer to get the news online then with newspaper. However, I was surprised to that YouTube is the second biggest search engine.

  39. Michael Whited says:

I am not surprised how quickly YouTube has become an advertising mecca, it is the ultimate free advertising and continuous ability to video update your customer base. The impact of social media on marketing and advertising has made a huge difference in small companies being able to grow faster than in the 80’s and 90’s. People talk and have a say about companies and that too can be a huge advantage or disadvantage depending on the content of the talking being done, people need visual stimulation instead of just reading it, social media gives us that.

  40. jessicaumkc says:

a strategic marketing such as promotion is being used in this commercial. the use of marketing penetration in this video gives the ability to demonstrate how we can impact on society by using social media thorough sites such “you tube”. by using media like this one seeks to demonstrate how advertising can be promoted through many different ways to engage consumers with the product, in this case “taco bell”. the use of old generation (seniors) in this video in you tube advertises how any one can be part of a great product and enjoy it as same as others. technological advantages such as you tube gives the impact of social network through marketers to advertise product to consumers around the world. adaptation and strategic are used to promote product by technological usage .

  41. Chao Xu says:

This video is great and it shows what most customer are interested in. Online information has become the most popular way to read news. so the business shoud foucus on the online society than others, like video or online newspapers. Customers prefer easy and convenient way than what is used be.

  42. Juncheng Tang says:

Ads in America are more attractive than China. Most video ads are boring which just tell consumers what dose the product do. Some ads in America not only tell consumers what does the product do and make consumers to buy

  43. Alex Schmidt says:

It might me interesting to see how television evolves in the future since marketing is failing in this industry. I believe we will turn away from marketing on television and increasingly favor the internet and smart phones.

  44. Feiran Ye says:

I think it is very interesting to see the large statistics on number of users for various social media groups like facebook and twitter, especially about their rapid growth everyday. Online information has become the most popular way to catch the world. Advertising on the internet allows small businesses to have similar access to the people of the world without the cumbersome expenses and inefficiencies of print and tv advertising.

  45. Kristina Turner says:

It is very interesting to see the actual statistics, though I’m not sure I would say surprised. I wonder if there isn’t though, a little bit of begrudging towards Google (maybe in part due to its takeover of Youtube) from Apple. In light of this information that Youtube is the 2nd most popular search engine, and Google is becoming more and more popular on the information and research side of the technology industy. It seems that they’ve decided to try to hit Google (who powers a lot of the Android operating system) on the back-end in their suit against Samsung over intellectual property. It may have been just a secondary thing, but all market shares are down. The whole technology market is going through interesting changes right now, and I know I’m on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what this will mean for future advertising, product innovation AND customer interaction and experience.

  46. Matthew Peters says:

I am definitely not surprised by these statistics, however it seems a bit odd that a lot of companies are putting ads on youtube because you can usually skip the ad in five seconds or so. I really hope that they don’t get rid of the skip because I don’t want to sit and view an ad that is potentially the same length as, or a large fraction of, the video I’m trying to watch. However, if you can’t skip the ads, then I can see the benefit for the companies due to the large user base, but I feel that some would find other sources of video entertainment on the internet.

  47. Niral Patel says:

I believe smart phones are going to be the future for all marketing purposes. With the new technology most smart phones are perfect substitutes for a computer or TV so the future of how companies get exposure relies on how well they can effectively market their product using apps or mobile friendly sites.

  48. Laura Jackson says:

These statistics were very interesting. I never knew that so many people used YouTube as a search engine, but since so many people do projects themselves I shouldn’t be too surprised. I thought this was a clever way for this company to stress the needs of their services and how many potential people you could reach using the internet and social media.

  49. Beka Shiley says:

I was surprised that Youtube is the second largest search engine. It is also amazing how many mobile devices are being added every day! I agree that cell phones are very important marketing tool! You can now do everything that you can do on a camera, TV, and PC on a handheld device. Amazing!

  50. Alex Wine says:

I’m surprised that newspaper advertisement has hung on this long since other forms of marketing are exponentially more effective. As far as television advertisements, the returns seem so negligible it’s not really worth it unless you have a ground breaking campaign. The only recent commercial campaigns that come to mind as having achieved real success are the Allstate Mayhem campaign ( http://youtu.be/sFFatUJPDUk ) and the Geico gecko campaign. It’s become more cost effective to create an internet/social media based marketing strategy. Companies that neglect to do this will lose market share and be left behind.

  51. Kanyun Hong says:

I never know Youtube is that widely used. Internet is changing the way of communicating of human beings. I can’t imagine what the world will be like in the future.

  52. Stephanie Wilson says:

I found this video very interesting and actually had to watch it twice because some of the slides went so fast. I could not believe how many people buy an IPhone in one day! I also found it very surprising that Youtube took second place in the search engines. I know I use it everyday but most of my friends do not.

  53. Abdulrahman Alsanad says:

i am really surprised how huge youtube is as a marketing tool, and i partially agree with it as a full ad. tool because it may not connect to the samples of the community you want. the cell phone devices part really grabed my attention, and i really agree with it because now days even kids have their own cell phones.

  54. ahmad Alsane says:

Its obvios how the numbers of internte users boosted to 2,405.,518,376
this numer shows how the enternewt is a good place for ads ,
their is sevral socail media that companies could use to make thier ads
    such as Twitter,Youtube, Google+,Linkedin,and facebook.

  55. Alex Chang says:

Yes the internet is big. I think everyone can see that. Strategically using it to your advantage is another thing. I think the companies that can use it the most effectively will end up on top.

  56. Shane Hauschild says:

I often use twitter and facebook on my mobile device. I think that marketing through there platforms could prove very successful for retaiilers. As I am out shopping, looking for restaurants, etc. I often find myself looking to these platforms.

  57. Michael Whited says:

It is not at all surprising how twitter and facebook are being used today, it is a huge mecca for all marketing types and puts it in a environment that is not too intrusive (i.e. not interrupting your favorite shows) I use facebook for reviews of all kinds and will continue to do so, I get real life and uncut opinions about products and things I want.

  58. Emily Higgins says:

I love YouTube and I am not at all surprised by its marketing impact! The internet, including social media websites, have a much bigger impact on out purchases then we even realize!

  59. Jacob Halpern says:

I am not surprise from all the statistics that they gave. Twitter I never used, Facebook is the main one I used most of the time. I think facebook is a big market attraction.

  60. Kyle Yancik says:

YouTube is a great way to market items people are using facebook to advertise on the side of every page. Like facebook lots of people go on You Tube.

    • John Larson says:

How many people actually look at the ads on the side of the Facebook page? YouTube has placed ads for movies and products that will load before you are able to watch your desired video (even though you may have the option to skip the ad after 5 seconds in some instances). I think Facebook, along with the company’s purchasing the ads, need to do some market research to determine the efficacy of such placements. I suppose that these ads might work subliminally, but that may be a stretch when determining the overall investment of advertising on Facebook.

      • Randy Pick says:

Well, there is the annoyance factor and interruption – the ads are less noticeable but don’t interfere with the sought product.

      • Derek Bembry says:

There have been studies that show a huge percentage of people do not even notice the ads. And out of those that actually click on the ad itself, the largest portion, clicked the ad by accident. I think the overall effectiveness in improving sales, brand awareness, and brand loyalty would be an excellent topic for researchers to study because it seems to be ineffecient at best.
